Combatting that mask!

Did you know there was such a thing as maskne? Apparently this is the name for acne or breakouts caused by constant mask wearing. But even if you don't have oily or problem skin, you can see still suffer from dryness and soreness when wearing masks for long periods.

You can't avoid wearing a mask, so what should you do to protect your skin and reduce problems?

Cleanse thoroughly

Use a gentle cleanser, so you're not stripping the natural oils out of the skin. The lovely 365 Daily Wash/Scrub from Germaine de Capuccini is perfect for this, but of course there are lots of cleansers you can try. Cleanse morning and night.

If you are wearing make-up be sure to remove this thoroughly and then cleanse again to keep your skin clear of bacteria.

Adjust your foundation

If you are struggling then change your foundation to something suited to blemishes. Clinique Anti Blemish Solutions Foundation is worth a try, and just one example.

Use a barrier/serum

A serum can provide a light barrier for your skin - just a little bit more protection. Germaine's Pollution Defence Serum repairs your skin's defence barrier to prevent toxic particles entering the skin and improves the effects of the products you apply afterwards.

Blemish treatments

There quite a few options here. Germaine do something called the Invisible Spot Patch, it is transparent (but you can still see it!), so may be worth a try if you are working from home or at night, but it really is a little miracle worker. Others to try - Origins Super Spot Remover Blemish Treatment Gel and Keihl's Breakout Control Blemish Lotion.

Moisturise

Don't be tempted to skip this step if your skin has had a few breakouts. It's essential to maintain moisture, and sometimes spots and pimples appear when skin is too dry, so you could be adding to the problem. Just choose a moisturiser that's right for your skin.

Take your mask off

As soon as you are able to do so. So don't forget to take it off in the car, for example. Dirt, moisture, perspiration can all have an effect on your skin, so take the chance to air your skin as soon as you can.

Wash your masks

If you are using re-usable masks be sure to wash them regularly, and don't just stuff them in a coat pocket or your handbag, where they can pick up more germs. Try to avoid using masks that are very big - the larger the area covered the more problems. You may even be able to use children's masks if you have a small face.

Experiment with different fabrics too - you may find a silk mask, or one with a cotton lining works better for you than a manmade fibre.

Wash your hands

You are probably sick of being told this! But it's vital not to touch your face with dirty hands - it just spreads more germs.

I don't want to only talk about Germaine products as there are lots of other wonderful skin products available. However, I do have some great products I can recommend if you'd like to try them. And that's for guys as well as ladies!

If you would like to talk to me about what I recommend, please give me a call, or ask about samples when you have your next treatment.
