Sensitive Skin

Did you know, up to 60% of the female UK population claim to have sensitive skin? So, if that's you, know that you are not alone!

Sensitivity manifests itself in lots of ways - from occasional redness to full on sore dry patches, spots under the skin, Rosacea, Eczema and Psoriasis. It can also feel like a burn - similar to when you brush against stinging nettles.

Some have sensitive skin all the time, and some find there are certain products, foods or external stimulants that cause them to have a flare up. Be aware, so you can identify what's causing the irritation.

Sensitivity can happen at any time, and sadly, it's not uncommon during the menopause - yes, something else to contend with! Some medication can also cause skin sensitvity.

Knowing what causes your skin to be sensitive is one thing, but how can you look after your skin, reduce the irritation and keep it looking its best?

Here are some tips:

Warm water

If you use a wash off cleanser, a mask or have any need to put water on your face, use lukewarm water, never hot or cold

Gentle cleanser

Something like a Micellar Water is a great choice because it's pH balanced - incredibly gentle, and less stimulating using cotton wool pads, than a wash off cleanser. Germaine's B-Calm Micellar Water Gel is a good option, but equally you could try Garnier Micellar Water Facial Cleanser or Bioderma Sensibio H2O.

Exfoliate in moderation

Don't avoid exfoliating, as you still need to remove dead skin cells, and it can help the appearance and texture of your skin. But only do this once per week, using an incredibly gentle formula designed specifically for sensitive facial skin. The Germaine O2 Scrub is a perfect choice for this.

Use an SPF

Make sure you use a product with SPF all year round to protect your skin which will be naturally more sensitive to the sun.

Try an oil

No, I haven't become obsessed! But an oil can be very soothing. The Lilac Room best selling product is Germaine's Rosehip Oil, which is perfect for all skin types, but you will find it really calms any irritation or soreness.

Don't avoid products

Some ladies tell me that they don't put anything on their skin for fear of irritating it. Please use products, but ones specifically designed for your sensitivity - it will help to reduce that soreness and tight feeling, improve the texture and protect it from the elements.

Be gentle

Don't scrub or rub enthusiastically, be gentle. But also try to avoid keep touching the skin - you just inflame it even more
