Returning from the Sun

Last time, we talked about protecting yourself in the sun, this time, we are going to focus on home facials, and pampering your skin after enjoying a holiday:

  • Exfoliate - this is the biggie. You need to exfoliate at least once per week, but ideally twice. This will depend on the type of exfoliant you use, so experiment to find out which one is best suited to your skin.

  • Serum - you'd be forgiven for thinking I'm a little bit obsessed with serums! But they really are little miracles, when you find the right one for you. I think they should feature as part of your regular routine, but definitely after prolonged sun exposure, like a holiday abroad.

  • Day cream - also referred to as moisturiser. These tend to be a slightly lighter formula, although it will depend on your skin type - the drier your skin the richer the cream, usually. Remember to do your neck and décolletage, as well as your face. Use gentle movements to massage the cream in. When applying to your neck use upward movements towards your chin.

  • Cleanse and tone - do this twice per day - once in the morning, either in the shower or after dependent on the type of cleanser you use. Then again in the evening to remove make up and prepare your skin to repair over night. If you have worn quite a bit of make up then double cleanse at night - once to remove the make up and again to leave your skin really clean.

  • Night cream - richer than a day cream, a night cream will help to boost skin repair while you sleep

  • Sleep - try to get at least 7 hours per night, as sleep really is the best treatment for skin repair, and actually for your whole body. If a good uninterrupted night eludes you, then don't underestimate the value of a power nap during the day.

  • Mask - give your skin a boost by treating it to a mask, suited to your skin type. Make sure you take some time to relax and enjoy it, so you and your skin get maximum benefit. So this is time to unplug the phone, get the kids out of the house, and just close your eyes with your feet up...
